XOLO launched the new Q1000 quad-core Android at Rs. 15K

XOLO officially launched the Q1000 in India at Rs.14,999. Its the company's third device in the quad-core Q-series after Q700 & Q800. The USP of the phablet is its 5 inch IPS-LCD display (1280x720 pixels) combined with protection by Dragontrail glass. It provides high resistance to scratch and shock, although its much thinner than the conventional glass screen at 8.8 mm. Budget phablets from other companies like Karbonn, Zync, Lava, etc fail to offer such protection to the display!

Key Specs:
  • 5 inch (1280 x 720 pixels) HD IPS display (295 ppi) with scratch-resistant Dragon Trail Glass
  • 1.2 GHz MediaTek quad-core processor with PowerVR SGX544 GPU
  • Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • Dual SIM (GSM + GSM)
  • 8 MP rear camera with LED Flash, BSI sensor
  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera
  • Full HD 1080p video playback
  • 1 GB RAM | 4 GB internal memory | 32 GB expandable
  • 3G (HSDPA: 42.2 Mbps, HSUPA: 11.5 Mbps) | WiFi 802.11 b/g/n | Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS | 3.5 mm audio jack | FM radio
  • 2100 mAh battery | 8.8 mm thick

This phablet will certainly face tough competition as several such devices with quad-core processors have been launched recently around the same price bracket. But the device surely looks promising.

The company at launch is also including a free premium case for the tablet, estimated to be worth Rs. 2,990. It seems that Sony aims to rival Apple & Samsung by giving customers a No down payment, No processing fee and 0% interest plan on a 6 month EMI offer.

This tab was first unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2013. Sony has also included several exclusive features on the Xperia Tablet Z. Users will have 6 months of free unlimited streaming and music download from Sony Music, which features over 15 lakh international, Bollywood, and regional songs from the Sony Music library. Also available is access to Sony LIV, a video streaming service for SAB, Sony Entertainment and Max channels in India, allowing users to watch TV shows after their repeat telecasts. Over 77 programs and 4500 hours of videos and programs will be available via LIV, apart from exclusive content for KBC and Indian idol.

Another interesting feature (apart from universal remote control functionality previously seen in the Sony Xperia Tablet S), is X4 video, which allows users to see up to four videos simultaneously. S-Force Front Surround 3D sound is also onboard, apart from battery stamina mode for extended standby time. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is also PlayStation Certified, but of course, we’ve yet to see Sony truly leverage the PlayStation Suite for mobile devices. Preloaded applications include Google Chrome, Google Maps for Mobile with Street view and Latitude, Google Play, and Google Wallet.

Feel free to let us know what do you feel about this tablet. Will it create a wave in the Indian market, or fade away as an enormously priced device in an highly competitive segment?

In this era of 'Smartphones' where numerous brands battle against each other for their phone sales, its a really sad fact that all it takes for a smartphone to get attention is either a really large screen or the number of cores in the processor! It may really seem that a phone is SMART if it has such features, but the ground reality is really contrasting! Is your phone really a 'Smartphone' ? Most probably NO !!

Read this interesting article by Rajiv Makhni who aptly describes how the recent 'so-called' smartphones don't even provide the basic amenities that it is supposed to and how the smartphone manufacturers across the globe fail to innovate with respect to these pre-requisites!

Nexus 4 now available for pre-order online for Rs. 25,990

If you've been waiting a long, long time for the Nexus 4 smartphone to come to India, we've got some good news for you. The Nexus 4 is now available for pre-order in India from multiple online retailers including Flipkart for Rs. 25,990.

Unlike the Nexus 7 tablet, the Nexus 4 will not be sold through Google’s Play Store but instead directly through retailers. While it’s great news that the phone is finally here, it sure has taken a long time getting here. The Nexus 4 was originally launched in October of last year and has since then been sold in many countries except for India.

For the uninitiated, the Nexus 4 is an Android smartphone marketed and sold by Google (but manufactured by LG) with a 4.7 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280x768 pixels (318 ppi). It is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. Additional features include double tap to wake which was first seen on the Nokia N9. Nokia says that the update will start rolling out in July and will be available across the entire Lumia Windows Phone 8 product portfolio.

Xolo launched the Q700 with quad-core processor & Android 4.2 for Rs. 10,000.

Xolo has officially launched the Q700, the company’s second quad-core Android smartphone in the Q Core series. Back in March, Xolo had launched its first phone with a quad-core processor, the Q800.

It comes with Xolo Switch app that would let users create multiple profiles and switch between profiles easily, Xolo Secure app that would let them lock the phone, back up the SMS and call log and track it remotely if it’s lost and the Xolo Power app that optimizes the phone’s battery usage.

Xolo Q700 Specifications:
  • 4.5 inch (960 x 540 pixels with 16M colors) capacitive IPS display at 245 ppi based on One-Glass Solution (OGS) technology
  • 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek 6589W-M processor | 238 MHz PowerVR SGX544 GPU
  • Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • Dual SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby
  • 5 MP rear camera with LED Flash, BSI sensor and 720p HD video recording
  • VGA (0.3 MP) front-facing camera
  • 10.2 mm thick and weighs 151.3 grams
  • 1 GB RAM | 4 GB internal memory | 32 GB expandable with MicroSD
  • 3G (HSDPA: 21 Mbps, HSUPA: 11 Mbps) | WiFi 802.11 b/g/n | Bluetooth 3.0 | GPS
  • 3.5 mm audio jack | USB OTG v2.0 HS
  • 2400 mAh battery

The Xolo Q700 comes in Blue and Brown colors at is priced at Rs. 9999.

Its clear that most companies are trying to allure customers by providing phones with quad-core processors at low prices. Thus, the XOLO Q700 will compete with Micromax Canvas HD(A116) that was launched recently. It would also compete with the Karbonn that previously launched the Karbonn Smart Titanium 1 with Snapdragon's quad-core CPU and also S2 Titanium.

Although it may seem a good thing that there are a lot of phones with such porwerful processors at low prices, the sad part is that these companies often ignore the basic features of a smartphone, i.e., durability, battery backup and after-sales service.

The XOLO Q700 might be a better option compared to others considering that Micromax A116 is not easily available and the Karbonn Titanium has a very large screen.

Nokia announced new Asha 501 with new Asha OS, slated to release in June for around Rs.5400.

The Finnish mobile manufacturer has introduced the first of its new lineup of Asha smartphones, Asha 501, featuring a revamped design philosophy, and a brand new OS, in hopes of revitalizing its struggling smartphone ambitions.

As expected, Nokia in New Delhi unveiled the Asha 501, the first of a 'new' family of Asha smartphones. Today’s image leaks of the smartphone were spot on – the design philosophy for the 'new' Asha family is aping that of the Lumia series. It initially debuted with the Asha 311 and the other full touch Asha phones, now it has been re-hauled with more UX elements from the N9′s Meego user interface, complete with the double tap to wake gesture and the minimalistic homescreen setup.

The Asha 501 is the platform lead device for the new ‘Nokia Asha software platform 1.0’, based on Smarterphone’s OS, a company Nokia acquired back in 2011. Unfortunately, this does mean Nokia will have another nascent ecosystem on its hands again, and will be releasing SDK/APIs for developers soon. But the compatibility with Java ensures that S40 apps from the Nokia Store can be easily ported.

With just 64 MB RAM (coupled with a proprietary OS), the Asha 501 certainly seems like a throwback to the budget smartphones of yesteryear. The Slam sharing feature is also here, using Bluetooth to share data with a bump. Nokia is also taking up the Xpress browser on the Asha 501, offering cloud-compression, with a trending news-reading feature called Xpress Now. The Xpress browser can actually minimize data consumption upto 80% using server side compression.

The new Asha OS has a Fastlane feature, which users can access with a swipe, displaying all recently accessed aspects of the phone, from apps to contacts to messages, allowing users to quickly jump between their most commonly used features. It is built rather well, utilizing a unibody design with a removable shell.

Specifications:
  • 3 inch (320 x 240 pixels | 256k colors) TFT display with hardened glass
  • Available in Single SIM or ‘EasySwap’ Dual-SIM models
  • 1 GHz processor | 64 MB RAM
  • 3.2 MP camera
  • 128 MB of internal memory | 32 GB expandable (with 4GB card free in the box)
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth v3.0 with EDR, and FM radio (No 3G)
  • Dimensions: 99.2 x 58 x 12.1 mm | Weight: 98 g
  • Dual SIM (with one slot capable of hot swap)
  • 40 EA Games (worth Rs. 4090) downloadable from Nokia Store for free
  • Available colors  Bright Red, Parrot Green, Cyan, Lemon Yellow, White and Black
  • 1200 mAh battery with up to 17 hours of talktime and standby times of 48 days (single-SIM) and 26 days (dual-SIM)
The Asha 501 comes pre-installed with some major apps, like Facebook and Twitter. It will start shipping in June, and has been given a suggested price of $99 (roughly Rs. 5,400) before taxes and subsidies. The Asha 501 will be made available in more than 90 countries from approximately 60 operators worldwide!

Google unveiled the Nexus 7 last June, and the 3G version with 32GB storage was announced at the Google I/O in October last year.
